You know copy sells, and you know yours needs some work. But finding the time for a copy overhaul is tough, especially if you’re a solopreneur, or running a small business.
The long term solution is to hire a copywriter. In the meantime, take these 3 steps to immediately improve your website copy:
- Fix grammatical and spelling errors
Nothing says “this business isn’t serious” like obvious spelling or grammatical mistakes in website copy. Such mistakes kill your credibility with customers, sending them straight to your more polished competitors.
Make a quick – but thorough – scan of the copy on your landing, sales, about us, and FAQ pages. Fix any errors as you find them. Better yet, have a friend or colleague make the same scan. You’ve seen your copy so many times you might not catch the mistakes, but a fresh set of eyes will.
- Upgrade your CTAs
Uninspired calls to action don’t get clicks. Upgrade your CTA buttons to give your website copy an instant boost.
For example, let’s say you’re an artisanal ice cream shop. You want website visitors to sign up for your newsletter so you can send them through your sales funnel. If your CTA button for this action is something generic like “Sign Up,” or “Learn More,” change it to “Get the Scoop,” for a CTA with more personality and branding.
- Reduce the amount of copy on your site
If copy sells, it might sound counterintuitive to reduce the copy on your site. But if prospective customers, who are short on time like the rest of us, see a wall of copy on your site, they’re likely to click away.
Capture their attention with short, punchy copy that gets straight to the point. Look over your web pages to spot any sections that look copy dense. Cut them down by removing any repetitive, flat, or non-productive copy.
